What Natural Light Changes

Two rooms can have the same measurements and feel nothing alike. One is bright at breakfast and dim by four; the other holds light until evening. The difference is not size or paint. It is where the openings are and which way they face. Light is the one material in a home that costs nothing and changes everything, and it is decided entirely in the plan.

The same room, lit from two sides instead of one, becomes a different place to live.

Orientation sets the day. Light from the east wakes a bedroom gently; light from the west warms a living room in the hours a family is actually in it. Openings set the mood. A room lit from one wall has a single, flat quality. Add a second source, a window on the next wall or a balcony door, and the room gains depth: shadows move, surfaces change through the day, and the space reads larger than it measures. It also has practical effects. Rooms with two-sided light need fewer lamps, cross-ventilate on their own and dry faster after rain. At Meadows the living room and all three bedrooms are planned to take light from more than one direction, with balconies on three sides of the home.

“Be Awesome Today!”

There is a simple way to judge light that no plan can replace. Visit at the hour you are usually home, stand in the room you will use most, and count the directions the light arrives from. Then come back once more at a different hour. If the room still feels alive the second time, the orientation is right. Arrange a visit to Meadows at the time of day that matters to you and we will confirm it.
